All those registered for the course must take an entrance test for English language skills, on the basis of which some may be considered unqualified for the course.
The course will first provide an introduction to the Law and Humanities movement in general and then focus on different, even if strictly connected, fields of study: Language & Literature, Visual, Music and Performance.
Course Learning Objectives
The course will question the traditional isolation of legal studies by analyzing law with reference to other social sciences and, more generally, cultural processes. Texts, symbols and representations of the law, which have greatly influenced popular understanding of it, will be discussed by scholars coming from different parts of the world, each of whom will be teaching 1-3 lessons on a specific topic.
At the end of this course, students should be proficient the following subject areas and skills:
-understanding of the field of law and literature, law and the visual, critical legal studies
-identifying theories on law approached from other disciplinary fields
-argue persuasively on matters of law and humanities
Course Learning Activities
The activities that the students will do during the semester
- To introduce students to the Law and Humanities movement.
- To investigate the benefits of interdisciplinary studies.
- To develop a critical approach to legal texts.
- To stress the importance of the cultural context for a better understanding of law.
To achieve the above objectives, students will …(e.g., write briefs, attend and report on guest lectures, prepare for and participate in moot court exercises or mock trials, make oral presentations, write research paper(s), engage in class discussions/debates, submit blog entries, respond to “cold call” questioning, etc.).
Participation in the course will be subordinate to a written admission test in English designed to verify the speaking, reading and writing level of students, according to the criteria set for all Studying Law at Roma Tre courses. The aim of the test is to select a group of students capable of fully profiting from the course.
Final assessment will be based on three criteria:
1) Students’ participation in class.
2) Midterm Exam: students will be asked to discuss and present a paper on a topic related to “Law and Humanities”.
3) Outcome of final written exam (in class), which will take place as follows:
students will be asked to write two short texts (1 page each), chosen by the single student among the topics discussed during the course. Questions will be based on the readings provided during the course. Students’ answers will be then be briefly discussed during the final oral exam (based on the outcome of the aforementioned tests).
Frequency is compulsory. The course consists in a series of short seminars (or a single lecture) given by different speakers, each providing a number of readings (from 1 to 3). Attendance is necessary in order to understand the content of the course and to develop students’ English language skills.
Readings will be provided during the course on the basis of suggestions made by the single speakers. The list of readings will be published on the blog and then distributed to students a few days before the start of each series of lectures.
