International Humanitarian Law 2018

Course description:   
The course is made up of introductory lectures on the main subjects of IHL (eg. origins, sources, classification of armed conflicts, targeting process, detention in armed conflicts, implementation of IHL, etc.), followed by seminars devoted to the discussion of cases and documents concerning the contemporary practice of armed conflicts with the participation of military and academic experts. Some students could also be selected to take part in the activities of the IHL Legal Clinic (7 CFU).

Course Learning Objectives 
At the end of this course, students should be proficient the following subject areas and skills:

  • understanding of the field of international humanitarian law
  • defining and applying the key concepts of international humanitarian law
  • identification of relevant IHL sources
  • argue persuasively on matters of international humanitarian law

Course Learning Activities
To achieve the above objectives, students will be involved in class discussions and requested to take an active role during presentations made by scholars and practitioners. Quizzes on IHL will also be arranged during classes to assess intermediate results achieved by students. Visits to institutions dealing with IHL might be arranged during the course.

Assessment tools
The final exam will be an oral one. Students will also be assessed on the basis of their (active) participation in classes.

Attendance policy
Attendance is required to sustain the exam.

Students are requested to prepare their exam on the basis of the textbook Nils Melzer, International Humanitarian Law. A Comprehensive Introduction. This open-access volume can be downloaded at

Students are also required to study their notes and PPT circulated during classes.
