Course Description:
The course will introduce different theoretical approaches that address the relation between law and gender: from critiques of the neutrality of the legal subject, to the gender mainstreaming approach and to more recent discussions on intersectionality.
Part of the seminar course will discuss case law relevant in the development of categories that are currently central to debates on law and gender, such as vulnerability, social reproduction, exploitation and consent.
The course will dedicate specific attention to the penal instrument contrasting violence against women at national and European level.
Part of the course will be dedicated to the discussion of gender representation in the media.
Fieldtrips:
The 2020-2021 course will be held on-line. Nevertheless students will have the opportunity to take part (on a voluntary basis) in two fieldtrips to the
Casa internazionale delle donne and Casa delle donne Lucha y Siesta
Course Learning Objectives:
At the end of this course, successful students will be familiar with the main issues related to law and gender and debated at international level. Furthermore successful students will be familiar with the main instruments implementing the gender mainstreaming approach.
Course Learning Activities:
The teaching methodology implemented during the seminar course will encourage the active participation of students and their involvement in the choice of coursework topics.
Assessment Tools:
The students will be evaluated for their active participation in the course activities, through coursework, and a final oral examination on the course topics.
Attendance Policy:
Students must attend at least 70% of the lessons

Reading materials will be distributed during the course.
