The course aims at providing students with the theoretical foundations of the role of State intervention in market economies, as well as its main implications in terms of efficiency and equity.
In the first part of the course, after an introduction to the basic concepts and results of welfare economics, the most important market failures that justify public intervention, along with the main solutions proposed in the economic literature, are addressed.
The second part of the course is devoted to an economic analysis of taxation. Firstly, an introduction to the principles of taxation is provided. Secondly, the issues of tax efficiency, tax burden and tax shifting will be addressed. Finally, the main configurations of direct and indirect taxation are discussed.
